Tombstone Tuesday: Topeka State Hospital

Sign on the north side of Outer Circle Drive, at north
end of the old Topeka State Hospital (insane asylum)
grounds. Graves are beyond the rise behind the sign.


Almost 1,200 lost souls are buried beyond and to the left
of the two monuments listing their names alphabetically.
Inmates' remains not claimed by their families were interred
here, with only 14 having individual tombstones or markers.

can be searched at Find A Grave.
A historic example of Victorian architecture, the TSH
administration building barely escaped the wrecking
ball, but awaits restoration to its former glory.

In its heyday, the charm of those turrets and balconies belied the
horrors in store for those unfortunate enough to be committed.
