I have collected quite a bit of information about the family over the last 20 years. I have a box full of family photos and letters dating back to 1885 to and from the Hummer family members. I think two of the sisters married a Cupp. One of the photos is of a Cupp headstone. I saved these mementos when my grandfather died. Martin Paul Calhoun was Vera's son. Vera married a Horace Wilder in Guthrie when she was 18 in 1891. Judge John S Calhoun signed the marriage license. A year later Vera and Calhoun married. The judge was 38. They divorced in 1898. I have a copy of the divorce decree. The judge remarried, quit law and was a preacher. He went to the Carolinas. Vera married another man in 1903 near Chicago where she graduated from nursing school. She left Charles Michael after 2 months and went back to Kansas. My grandfather Paul was born in September 1904. It is pretty clear that his father was not Judge Calhoun. We think that Vera got pregnant without being married, maybe even by a man married to someone else and decided to give Paul the Calhoun name. These theories are based on intensive research over the last couple months after getting DNA results. My brother and match a Minor family as half first cousins 1R and their daughter as a strong 2nd cousin. The Minors lived in and around Iola, Kansas which is not far from Emporia where Vera was born and raised. I have a letter addressed to Vera in Iola Kansas in March 1904. The minors had a grandfather the same age as Vera whose wife was 8 months pregnant when Paul was conceived. He was a good looking man. The type that Vera and her sisters liked. I'm still trying to establish my surname and find my roots. I have not found the death date and place and burial for Vera. I know it was around 1915 and that she was in Los Angleles shortly before then. I joind My Heritage and Ancestry to fill out my family tree. I have DNA with FTDNA, My Heritage, Ancestry and GEDmatch. I would like to get these pictures and documents posted online. There are a lot of people in the photos that I cannot identify. Maybe some of them are Cupps. But women have been divorcing husbands "forever". Most women simply didn't because they had no means of supporting themselves alone. Emma's circumstances must've changed if she had begun divorce proceedings. We'll never know.JamaGeniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16973656461323918279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8453775580949648277.post-82870206370398814672009-06-18T23:11:06.496-05:002009-06-18T23:11:06.496-05:00Wow what a great read. I assumed for years that she'd grown up and married, and it was while looking for a husband and children that I came across newspaper accounts of the accident and the wrongful death suit that followed.

You probably won't be surprised that my grandmother never mentioned either. Only one of many family secrets I've unearthed in 25+ years of digging.

Leila Lockwood Cupp was the daughter of a merchant.
